ut es Mu

My starting point in making this work was a problem I created in applying charcoal to thin films of plastic equivalent in weight to gold leaf. On fixing these films to pages of a book I was forced to work with lines of text which led me, through the process of erasure, to a language model.

Language is a system we often take for granted as fixed and immutable. But is our entire linguistic framework, and by extension our understanding of reality, more fluid and constructed than we typically acknowledge? Is it possible that even our most concrete constructions are, at their core, as fluid and mutable as our dreams?

As an artist, I am interested in the human need to make sense of our experiences, to find patterns in the seemingly random, and to construct meaning from the raw material of perception.
